Holocaust is a word of Greek origin meaning sacrifice by fire. But in the English language, the Holocaust was the most horrible genocide of approximatley six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. In January 1933, the Nazis came into power in Germany. They believed that Germans were the superior race, and that the Jews were inferior as well as a threat to the German racial community. It was not only the Jews that were deemed racial inferior:Gypsies, the disabled, and some Slavic peoples. Other groups were targeted based on their political, ideological and behavioral grounds. A ghetto police force enforced the orders of the German authorities and the ordinances of the Jewish councils, including the facilitation of deportations to killing centers. There was no hesitation to kill Jewish policeman who were perceived to have failed to carry out orders. The Germas forbade any form of schooling or education. Medicine, food and weapons were usually smuggled in since there was lack of in the ghettos.
